Ferment privacy policy

Last updated 03 September 2026

Ferment collects nothing. This page explains what that means in practice.

What is collected

Nothing. Ferment does not collect, transmit, sell or share any personal information. There is no account, no sign-in, and no server that belongs to us.

Where your data lives

Your batches, cultures, readings and settings are one record in this device's private app storage. Your journal photographs sit beside them in this device's private database. Neither is uploaded, backed up to us, or shared with anyone. Uninstalling the app deletes both, which is why Ferment can export the whole notebook as plain text or as a JSON backup at any time, and can erase everything on request from the Settings screen.

Network

Ferment does not request the INTERNET permission. It cannot send your data anywhere, because Android will not let it open a network connection at all. This is verifiable in the app's manifest on the Play listing.

Permissions

Children

Ferment is not directed at children under 13 and collects nothing from anyone, of any age.

Analytics, ads and tracking

There are none. Ferment contains no advertising SDK, no analytics SDK, and no crash reporter. It does not use an advertising ID.

Your rights

Because nothing is collected or transmitted, there is nothing held about you to access, correct or delete on a server. Uninstalling the app removes its data from your device. Any in-app export gives you a copy of your own content in an open format.

Photographs

Journal photographs are downscaled to a thumbnail on this device and written to the app's own private database. They never leave the app unless you choose to share one yourself. Ferment does not read any other photograph on the device, does not request access to your photo library, and has no permission that would let it upload one.

Culture cards

A culture card is a short code generated on this device that carries a culture's name, kind, birthday and family line. It is created only when you press the button, it travels only by whatever means you choose to send it, and it never passes through a server of ours because there is not one.

Export

Exporting writes a plain text or JSON file into this device's Downloads folder using your own tap. The file leaves the app only if you choose to send it somewhere yourself.

What Ferment is not

Ferment is a notebook for a hobby. It is not a food safety authority, it makes no health, nutrition or medical claims, and it cannot see inside your jar. Its safety guidance is general information written to be more cautious than the average forum comment, and categories with real hazard profiles, such as cured meats and low acid canning, are deliberately out of scope and signposted to proper resources.

Changes

If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this address with a new date.
