Umbra has no network permission. It cannot send anything anywhere, and this page explains how you can check that for yourself.
Nothing. Umbra does not collect, transmit, sell or share any personal information. There is no account, no sign-in, and no server that belongs to us.
Everything Umbra knows lives in this app's private storage on your phone: the places you typed in, their Bortle numbers, your observation log, your life list and your settings. There is no account, no sync and no analytics. The app can write the whole lot out as a JSON file into your Downloads folder whenever you ask it to, which is the only way any of it leaves the app.
Umbra does not request the INTERNET permission. It cannot send your data anywhere, because Android will not let it open a network connection at all. This is verifiable in the app's manifest on the Play listing.
Umbra is not directed at children under 13 and collects nothing from anyone, of any age.
There are none. Umbra contains no advertising SDK, no analytics SDK, and no crash reporter. It does not use an advertising ID.
Because nothing is collected or transmitted, there is nothing held about you to access, correct or delete on a server. Uninstalling the app removes its data from your device. Any in-app export gives you a copy of your own content in an open format.
This is the part people expect to be untrue of an astronomy app. Umbra does not request ACCESS_FINE_LOCATION or ACCESS_COARSE_LOCATION, does not call the browser geolocation API, and has no way to read where your phone is. You type a place, or pick a city from a list that ships inside the app, and it works from those coordinates. You can check this on the Play listing, which shows every permission the app declares.
The app does not hold the INTERNET permission, so it cannot fetch a forecast, an ephemeris, a map tile or an advert even if it wanted to. Every number it shows you, from tonight's sunset to an eclipse in 2027, is computed on the device from published astronomical algorithms that ship inside the app. Fonts are bundled. There are no third party SDKs, no trackers and no crash reporting.
When you turn alerts on, the app works out the next six weeks of nights, decides which ones clear the score you set, and hands that list to Android's alarm scheduler. No server knows your schedule, because no server is involved. Turning alerts off cancels the lot.
The app declares allowBackup="false", so your log is not copied into Google Drive or moved to a new phone behind your back. Moving your log to another phone is the JSON export, which you do on purpose.
Umbra is suitable for all ages, collects nothing from anybody, and has no adverts, no purchases and no user generated content.
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this address with a new date.
